James Ervin is a multi-instrumentalist, film composer and music producer who calls Toronto, Ontario home. Born and raised in Nova Scotia, James moved to Toronto to attend and complete Humber College’s world-renowned Bachelor of Music program. Since graduating in 2010, he has built a reputation as a multifaceted musician having toured with multiple Juno Award winners, including Walk Off The Earth, The Tenors and Matt Anderson. He has also had the pleasure of performing with Grammy Award winning singer, Shawn Mendez.
In addition to sharing his talents on stage, James continues to pursue his love for film composition and music production. His dedication to his craft has led to new creative partnerships in film. Most recently, he has held the role of film composer for feature length films including Lifetime Movie Network’s, My Evil Stepmom (2021, Marvista Ent.) and The Lakehouse Murders (2021, Marvista Ent.) Additionally, James has written for Disney Kid’s, PJ Masks ( via Vapor Music), and numerous short films including Akiel Gallina’s The Sky is Red (2021), Cancel The F&^% Internet (Riverlife Productions, 2017), and Mannish Boy (Ryan Tonelli, 2016).
Beyond the screen and stage, James works behind the scenes as a trusted music producer, arranger and mix engineer in the world of musical theatre. What started as a favour arranging and recording the instrumental tracks for a Toronto Fringe Festival show in 2018, has led to a growing list of projects including Elevator! The Musical ( 2020, CBC Gem ), Chew (2021 Crows Theatre), Living The Dream (2020, Sheridan College), and a workshop in New York City for Vampire On Poverty Row (2020).
When he’s not performing, or working on film or theatre projects, James can be found in his studio writing and developing new music for his original Yacht Rock project called, Rocket.
